Is everyone an author?

An author, by definition, is any person whose literary works have been published. Thanks to the wonderful workings of technology, any person with a computer, phone, tablet, etc., and access to the internet, now has the opportunity to become an author. Unfortunately, this now means that the possibility of being bombarded with useless information, misinformation, and ramblings has just grown exponentially.
There used to be a certain prestige to being known as an author. In fact less than a couple decades ago the literary works that were available to us were slightly revered, if only due to the hard work that a writer has to put into having their work published. Now the written word has become slightly tarnished, since all it takes is a simple click of a button, and the entire world now knows about your pet rock Scaly, and how he has been growing more distant towards you.

This plethora of discourse found on the internet has led me to believe that while anyone can be a writer; perhaps the meaning of author needs to be redefined.
